Your GFI outlets protect you from electrical shock near sinks and other water sources. Test them each month to make sure they work correctly. The electrical outlet in your bathroom that has the red and black
buttons in the middle is a Ground Fault Interrupter (GFI). 

Also called a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI), it's an electrical safety device located in areas where electricity might come in contact with

water, such as bathrooms and kitchens. When it senses a possible hazard, it shuts off the circuit to prevent shock to you or damage to an appliance.

Steps
Testing your GFIs regularly ensures they are working properly.

1. Locate your GFI electrical outlets. They are usually in bathrooms, kitchens, basements and outdoors.
2. Plug an appliance or small light into the GFI and then turn it on.
3. Press the TEST button on the GFI. The appliance plugged into the GFI should shut off.
4. Press the RESET button. The power should be restore
